TOPIC: Learn how to knit lace with linen yarn, and as a bonus, learn how to add beads to your lace knitting with teacher Donna Druchunas.

We’ll be making a pattern from Lithuania that can be made into a small doily or a larger shawl. You can choose between fingering and lace-weight linen yarn from Lithuania, and you’ll get amber beads to embellish your piece. We’ll make a sample over the weekend, and you can purchase a kit for a larger shawl to make at home if you want to.

 For intermediate to advanced knitters.

We will provide yarn and beads for your sample to make in class. We will also have additional linen yarn and amber beads from Lithuania, as well as other yarn and beads, available to purchase if you’d like to make more doilies or a shawl after the retreat.

Author, teacher, & mentor Donna Druchunas will be your teacher for this retreat held in beautiful north eastern Vermont. Your retreat will be at our brand new knitting store located in Donna’s farmhouse on 2 acres (newly remodeled with knitting store and upstairs classroom). We are in a quaint quite village in Barton, Vermont (USA) 25 miles south of the Canadian border. Exit 25 on Interstate 91. Easy access and 1 mile off the exit. This area is called the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

All of our retreats are held on Friday, Saturday, & Sundays. 10am-5pm with a few breaks during the day.
Your workshop fees includes supplies, snacks,  & catered lunch. Dinners are on your own at local restaurants, 20-30 minutes away via interstate highways.

Friday: Cast-on methods, checking gauge, trying different needle sizes and materials. String your beads and CO for your project.

We will experiment with different kinds of needles working with different weights of linen yarn to see how the yarn is different than other yarns we have worked with on projects. Based on our discoveries, we will cast on to knit a small sample doily either back-and-forth (rectangular) or in-the-round (circular).

Saturday: Learn which techniques are best for knitting lace with linen or other non-stretchy yarns like cotton, hemp, and silk. Work the lace sections of your practice doily.

Donna will tell you about the different ways you can handle the yarn and needles when working with yarn overs, decreases, and other stitches using linen yarn. Sometimes the way we are used to holding our yarn and needles can make working with new fibers more difficult than it needs to be. For example, we will explore how k2tog-tbl, ssk, and sl1-k1-psso create variations on left-slanting decreases that each have their special purpose. We will also look at two different ways to knit with beads.

Sunday: Bind off with or without beads. Block and (optionally) starch your linen doily.

Donna will show you four different bind-off options: working with and without beads, and binding off with a crochet hook or a knitting needle. We will also block our sample doilies and learn how to starch linen for household projects and hats. (It’s best not to starch a shawl, because we want that lovely linen drape.) We’ll also talk about how to use a circular shawl to make a parasol.

  • Beads & Linen will be provided for you to make your sample.
  • If you would like to use other yarns, they will be available.
  • Each retreat attendee will receive a goody bag of knitting items.
  • Items available in our store will be available also.

More info forthcoming as we get closer to the retreat.
